Be involved in our Cookbook!

(The above images are a wedding cupcake tower I made for Hamish & Laura's wedding - and is one of my favourite recipes!)

After the recent success of our fundraising venture for our charity - "Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust" we have decided on our next venture and that is the publishing of a cookbook!

We have seen with our fundraising how much can be achieved with community support for the children of Cambodia and how we can further their needs for a good education.

We are very proud to say that the foundations have since gone down for a secondary school for the children of Makak, a very exciting project to be involved with as the children of this remote area have never had the opportunity for an education past the age of 10 years old.

Our vision for this project is to have a book with recipes that are family favourites, perhaps something you enjoyed from childhood and reminds you of home, or of special friends, recipes that are simple yet stylish with a fresh twist and would be at home served to family or when entertaining.

We are hoping to achieve with this book a feeling of home, a warmth and a reminder of perhaps where you learnt to cook - for me it was with my mum and grandmother - although Friday nights were always cooking fish with my dad and always served with mashed potato and homemade coleslaw!

These cookbooks of tried and true family favorite recipes are always a success, and as a passionate cook and the owner of more recipe books than I care to admit to they are ones that are turned to time and time again.

If you would like to share your favourite recipes for consideration for our cookbook we would love to have them. Final submission date is APRIL 30TH 2011 and you may submit as many recipes as you wish, just as long as they are all recipes you have made many times, work and you love.

What we would like you to do:
1: send me via email - green33@xtra.co.nz your recipe, along with a short paragraph about the recipe, perhaps where it came from, if it reminds you of a childhood memory any notes that you think are suitable, or if it is a new favourite!

2: The heading title (from below) that you see it placed into

3: Name of the recipe, serving size if applicable, plus all steps, cooking times etc.

Your name will be credited to the recipe - so a great way to hand down your recipe to your children

Recipes will be collated under these formats: (final chapters will depend on recipes submitted):
Breakfast dishes
Lunch/light dishes
Nibbles
Mains
Vegetable, sides, and salads
Desserts
Celebrations - this can mean birthdays, weddings, christmas, easter, anytime!
Baking
Pantry Basics - sauces, preserves, dressings etc - in fact if it doesn't come under the other headings!

I am also hoping to have a special chapter filled with recipes from well known chefs/resturants - including their tips and tricks!

Recipes will be chosen on ease of making, appeal, style, point of difference.

If your recipe/s are included in our book you will receive a 20% discount on the purchase price of the book. We are aiming for a pre-2011 Christmas release - so a fantastic gift to give to family and friends.

We hope you will join with us and support in the making of this fundraising cookbook venture, and please feel free to send this email onto your friends and family who may wish to share and see their recipe in print - at the same time supporting our Charity - in fact the more people you send this on to and tell about it the greater variation in recipes we will have to put into the book - lets all make this book a huge success!

Bad, Bad, Blogger!!!

Hi everyone, where has the last few months gone??? December 1st and it is the last few days before Sophie heads away on her big trip. The nerves, excitment are all starting to hit home - and thats just me - her mother! I know that Sophie is very excited about what is ahead of her and very much looking forward to it!

Well there is some fantastic news after our fundraising evening here in Ashburton at the end of July. Initially we had the dream of raising enough money to perhaps build a classroom onto the existing primary school in Makak - but - we are very proud to announce that because these children didn't previously have the opportunity of an education past the age of 10 years old, primary level, we are in the position to build a secondary school - so to give the kids an opportunity that they haven't had before is incredible - and all down to the wonderful support we have had within this amazing community of ours!

The foundations went down on November 20th so as soon as I get photo's from the village I will post them here so we can all follow the progress.

There are exciting things in the pipeline for further fundraising that I am working on, inititives that will keep the momentum going and keep the school funded and in the future build on what we have already achieved and give more children the chance of a secondary school education - something we here in New Zealand take for granted.

I will put up information on a separate post about the next venture and hope that you will join us and become involved!

Well off to pack Sophie's back pack ready for her to have her build up day on Friday with the rest of the team, and for her very early morning flight on Saturday morning!

Mountaineering Legend - Mark Inglis

Mark is a man who will need no introduction, he is a mountaineer, researcher, winemaker and motivational speaker - and we are thrilled to welcome him to our fundraising event on July 23, 2010 here in Ashburton.

Mark was born in Geraldine in 1959. He has had various jobs as a Search and Rescue Mountaineer (Aoraki/Mt Cook), a Research Scientist (Christchurch Hospital), a Winemaker with Montana Wines, a Businessman, Motivational speaker, and Adventurer. He lives with his wife Anne and three children in Hanmer Springs.

Inglis began work as a professional mountaineer in 1979 as a search and rescue mountaineer for Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. In November 1982, Inglis and climbing partner Philip Doole were stuck in an ice cave on Aoraki/Mount Cook for thirteen days due to an intense blizzard. The rescue of the two climbers was a major media event in New Zealand. Both men's legs became badly frost bitten while awaiting rescue. Following Inglis' rescue, both his legs were amputated below the knee.

He returned to Mt. Cook in 2002 and reached the summit successfully on January 7 of that year, after a previous attempt was thwarted by problems with his leg stumps. The summit assault in January 2002 was documented by the film No Mean Feat: The Mark Inglis Story.

He holds a degree in Human Biochemistry from Lincoln University, New Zealand, and has conducted research in Leukemia.

He is a passionate and accomplished cyclist, which saw him win a silver medal in the 1km time trial event at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

In addition to being a goodwill ambassador for the Everest Rescue Trust, Inglis has created a New Zealand based charitable trust Limbs4All. He has also created a range of sports drinks and energy gels named PeakFuel.

In 2003, Inglis received the New Zealand Order of Merit as an Officer in recognition of his services to disabled people. On September 27, 2004, he successfully climbed Cho Oyu with three others, becoming only the second double amputee to summit a mountain greater than 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) in height.

On May 15, 2006, after forty days of climbing, Inglis became the first ever double amputee to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world - achieving his childhood dream. Inglis's Everest expedition was filmed for the Discovery Channel series Everest: Beyond the Limit.

TVNZ's 'This Is Your Life' on June 5, 2007 honoured Inglis with the now infamous red book.

He has 24 Number 1 singles to his credit, and as a songwriter or performer he is responsible for 32 number one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and has sold 15.5 million albums in the U.S alone. He has to his name 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles in the UK.

McCartney has worked on film scores and classical and electronic music, released a large catalogue of songs as a solo artist, and taken part in projects to help international charities. He is an advocate for animal rights, for vegetarianism, and for music education; he is active in campaigns against landmines, seal hunting, and Third World debt.

He is a keen football fan, supporting both Everton and Liverpool football clubs. His company MPL Communications owns the copyrights to more than 3,000 songs, including all of the songs written by Buddy Holly, along with the publishing rights to such musicals as Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, and Grease.

Opportunity's like this to own a piece of musical history seldom come along, so be the one to own this piece from one of the members of the greatest band of all time.

Charity Auction Item "Southern Peace" by Svetlana Orinko

We are very happy to have as one of our Charity Auction items a stunning watercolour painting by the very talented artist Svetlana Orinko.

"Southern Peace" is a painting inspired by a visit to the Cavalcade in Otago's Middlemarch, an event that attracts a large number of horse riders from around the country and overseas. Svetlana followed the Cavalcade via 4 wheel drive, giving her the opportunity to observe and sketch.

On this particular morning the riders were getting ready to ride, the sun was rising and the light was magic on the horses, people and mountains behind.

The colours of gold, red and blue inspired Svetlana and she couldn't wait to get home to paint - and this stunning painting is the result. Believe me my photo's of her art don't do it justice!

Svetlana Orinko is a master of Watercolour, a medium she chose because of its transparency and luminosity. Her 10 years of academic art training include the "Old Masters Techniques" began at the age of 12 in Russia's Ukraine. She completed an Art and Design Degree before arriving in NZ in 1992.
Her works cover a diverse range of subjects and reflect a mastery of form and intricate involvement with light. Her astonishing realism comes from skillful washes of colour, edges and her knowledge of the properties of the water and pigment.
Each painting holds a mystery that is also a personal story about the artist, the issues she is struggling with and how she feels about her place in the world.
Today, Svetlana is settled in Christchurch. Her dedication to art is validated by a lifetime struggle and hard work. Her restless mind is constantly exploring new frontiers, always attempting to touch the unknowable with her art.
She has won several Art Awards and received a lot of publicity. Her work is becoming popular with art lovers' worldwide.

A shameful plug!!

What started out as a fundraising initiative has grown into something more! Mum and I started making fudge, (naming the business "sweet & sassy") to sell to fund my own costs for the trip we began selling at markets, to family, friends and to my friends at school. People LOVE it and from those small beginnings we have now sold for wedding favours, restaurant supply and retail, working from a registered kitchen.

We sell six delicious flavours -

"Divine White Chocolate" - which is white chocolate based and similar to a Russian fudge - only better!
"Jersey Caramel" - a traditional caramel flavour,
"Decadent Chocolate" - a dark full flavoured one for the chocoholics - you know who you are!,
"Chocolate and Honeycomb" dark chocolate paired with golden pieces of honeycomb,
"Ginger,White Chocolate & Walnut" - Mum's favourite (a must if you love Ginger!),
"Coffee & Walnut" another divine flavour and another one of Mum's favourites....

If you love a smooth, creamy fudge this one is definitely for you! It is made with pure ingredients, with no preservatives added, and therefore is made to be enjoyed fresh! Each bag is beautifully packaged, sealed in a cellophane bag for freshness, and outer wrapped in a colourful bag and label. Each flavour has a different colour bag ranging from turquoise, hot pink, marine blue, purple, lime and orange.

For wedding favors we can package in a beautiful white gloss box, and satin ribbon with a diamante closure. For orders and pricing please discuss with mum on green33@xtra.co.nz

A great gift idea for Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day,Birthdays, Christmas, Valentines, Weddings, Corporate gifts, thank you gifts, or just for you! Sales of this fudge are funding my personal costs to be able to go on this expedition, and I am donating $1.00 from each bag sold to "Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust".

Prices for our fudge through our blog is only $6.00 per bag which is approximately a 200g size (gram weight can vary depending on the additions to the fudge e.g. honeycomb, or ginger and walnut additives).

orders can be emailed to green33@xtra.co.nz putting "fudge order" in the title line. Please give mum minimum 2 days notice for smaller orders, or for larger orders such as weddings, corporate discuss with mum.

Here is what one bride has said about her order of fudge for her "wedding favours"...

“We chose "sweet & sassy" homemade fudge as favours for our 150 guests at our wedding in January 2010. I bought small boxes and we personalized them with lace print card and black ribbon which brought our overall colour theme together perfectly. I had tried the fudge at a previous function and I can only describe it as “divine” … I have not ever tried anything like it before. The fudge was the talking point of our entire wedding, and many guests asked me the next day if there was more … luckily we ordered enough to cater for the following day as well, and our guests left very happy! I am really happy that we were able to give our guests a homemade and personal favour that they actually enjoyed, as many weddings I have been to the favours are thrown out – no one left their favours behind at our wedding! I whole-heartedly recommend "sweet & sassy" homemade fudge for any event - especially weddings. Sarah and Sophie, thank you so much for helping make our wedding day so memorable for our guests.”

Once again I am donating $1.00 per bag sold through my blog to our Charity "Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust" - so our new slogan should read "Eat fudge - save a life"!

NB: In the photo it is labelled as "Bite Homemade Fudge" which was our original market name but has since changed to "sweet & sassy" homemade fudge.

Wear it proud!!

As a fundraising initiative for our Charity "Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust" we have had custom made silicone wristbands produced in two colours - turquoise and magenta.

They are extremely hard wearing, with the wording "I (heart) Kids for Cambodia" printed on in white. At only $5.00 per bracelet they are a fun way of showing your support and ALL money from the sales of these go directly to our Charity. They are suitable sizing for children through to adults and are a great item to buy for yourself or a gift.

If you would like to show your support by purchasing a wristband please email us here - green33@xtra.co.nz putting "bracelet" in the subject line.

Welcome to the journey.....

Hello, my name is Sophie and I am going on the expedition of a lifetime to Vietnam and Cambodia in December 2010 with 13 girls from my school, two teachers and a professional trekking guide.

The organization that we are travelling with is called "World Challenge" and they have over 20 years experience leading expeditions such as this with teenagers all over the world.

In Vietnam we will be trekking in the hills, visiting local villages and in Cambodia we are undertaking a community project such as working in a orphanage or school. We are doing planned things to help the community, but I would like to take this one step further.

My goal is to really help this community by raising funds through the recently formed "Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust".

Over the next few days I will post information about my upcoming events, so I hope you will follow my journey and support me with my goals!
